Electrical Safety Testing & Compliance for Ships and Offshore Platforms
Precision testing. Full documentation. Class-compliant results.
Introduction
Electrical failures are among the most dangerous and costly incidents aboard marine vessels.
Whether caused by insulation breakdown or faulty protection systems, the results can be catastrophic – from equipment damage to life-threatening fires.
That’s why Delta Marine Sweden provides comprehensive marine electrical safety testing and compliance services – helping you meet class requirements, ensure operational integrity, and protect crew and assets.

Service Overview: What We Test
Our certified electricians and measurement engineers perform two primary categories of tests:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Insulation Resistance Testing (Megatest)
Also known as a “megatest”, insulation resistance testing evaluates the dielectric quality of cables, motors, and generators.
We measure:
- Insulation resistance of power and control cables (both LV and HV)
- Windings in marine electric motors and generators
- Automation and navigation system cabling
- New installations, retrofits, or suspect components
We test using:
- 500V to 5kV test voltages (depending on system rating)
- Class-approved, calibrated equipment
- Under isolated or operational conditions
Benefits:
- Early detection of aging insulation
- Fire prevention and system stability
- Class compliance (SOLAS, DNV, IEC 60092)

Short-Circuit Protection Testing
We measure the condition and functionality of short-circuit protection devices in:
- Main distribution boards
- Generator outputs
- Emergency switchboards
- Battery and UPS units
- Transformer or HV distribution sections
We evaluate:
- Tripping times and current thresholds
- Fault loop impedance
- Earth continuity
- Selectivity and coordination of protection devices
Why it matters:
If your fuses or breakers don’t trigger fast enough – or at all – your vessel is at serious risk.
Our testing ensures critical disconnection happens before damage or fire occurs.
Supported Systems and Voltages
We test and verify:
- Low-voltage systems (230V–1000V AC/DC)
- High-voltage marine systems (3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11kV)
- Single- and three-phase installations
- Motors from 1kW to 2MW
- Generator protection systems
- Integrated propulsion and hybrid grids
We also test after:
- New system installation
- Generator or UPS swap
- Fire or overload event
Classification renewal inspection

Measurement Methods & Standards
All tests are performed using:
- Calibrated instruments (Fluke, Megger, Metrel)
- Certified procedures based on IEC 60092, IEC 60364, and SOLAS Ch. II-1
- FAT-ready documentation formats
- Insulation resistance ranges from 0.1 MΩ to 10 GΩ
- Earth leakage and trip curve analysis for protection devices
Deliverables & Documentation
For every job, you receive:
- Full measurement protocol
- Resistance tables with cable ID and location
- Disconnection time reports
- Grounding and loop impedance logs
- One-line schematic with tested zones marked
- Class submission report (PDF)
This documentation supports:
- Ship inspections
- Internal technical records
- Insurance and classification audits
Predictive maintenance programs

Example Project
We provide full-scope solutions tailored for the maritime environment:

Real-World Case Study: Gdynia Shipyard 2023
A newbuild offshore supply vessel required full system compliance testing prior to delivery.
Delta Marine:
- Tested over 150 LV and HV cable circuits
- Performed megatest on 2 x 900 kW propulsion motors
- Verified selectivity in generator protection (4-panel system)
- Delivered full documentation in under 48 hours
Class inspection passed on first submission, saving the shipyard time and penalties.
FAQ
Typically 1 MΩ per kV is considered the minimum. For 1kV, that’s 1 MΩ. For HV, you want ≥5 MΩ or more.
For commercial vessels, we recommend annually. For high-voltage systems, every 6–12 months.
Yes – many of our tests are non-disruptive and can be performed during regular port calls or dock time.
Yes – we can advise on repairs, rewiring, and component replacement. We also support retrofit upgrades.
